Team Believe  – Athlete Profile

Joshua is a 14 year old swimmer from Beaumont, Alberta. As well as being a high-level athlete, Joshua dedicates himself to his academic studies. This June he graduated grade 9 with honors from New Horizons School for gifted learners. He will be entering grade 10 in the Elite Athlete program at Vimy Ridge Academy this fall.

Something not many people know about Joshua is that he is a math whiz. He has been solving simple math problems since before he turned 3 years old.

Joshua has been swimming with Triton Swimming since he was 6 years old and has just finished his 8th (and most successful) year with the club  He became interested in swimming after spending a year at the pool watching his big brother Noel who has just joined Triton Swimming (then Beaumont swimming) in its inaugural year. At the time Joshua, who was five did not know how to swim.  He wanted to be a Triton so bad that he taught himself to swim and joined the team in September.

Joshua has had a few different coaches over the years with Triton but has worked closely with his current coach Greg Kozell for approximately 6 years. Joshua joined Triton’s high performance group (the highest training group within the club) this last season.

Josh’s favorite food is tortellini with rose sauce or a REALLY good Bacon Burger.  The music he listens to is 80’s, 90’s or 2000’s pop and hip hop or current rap.  If he had to listen to one song repeatedly for the rest of his life, it would be ‘Africa” by Toto.  In the movie department Josh’s all time fav has to be the classic 1987 “Princess Bride”. His hobbies include gaming with friends, sleeping and spending time with his cat.

Josh considers himself a distance swimmer. His race of choice is 1500 meters freestyle. Joshua has accomplished many personal goals in his years as a competitive swimmer.

  • *His most notable to date would be his success at the 2016 Alberta summer games. He competed in six individual events and two relays. With some fast swimming, he earned four gold and three silver medals.
  •  This last season Joshua dedicated himself to training hard in order to qualify for his first National level meet. He reached this goal and attended his first Western Canadian Championship and Canadian Junior Championship.  He successfully completed his first 1.5km open water swim at Canadian Junior Championships this July and looks forward to many more open water experiences.
  •  His future goals include Canadian Senior Championships, representing Team Alberta, and eventually representing Canada at both the Junior and senior level. Joshua is small in stature for a swimmer of his age, but knows that over the next 6 years his goals and successes will change as he continues to develop as a high performance swimmer.

Where do you see yourself in 5 Years’ time?

In 5 years, he is planning to be a dedicated full time athlete while also attending University study to become an Orthodontist.

If you could do anything or have any job for one week – what would it be?

If Josh could do anything for a week, he would literally just sleep.

And when he say sleep for a week, he means 168 hours of constant sleeping.

What is one thing you cannot live without?

The one thing Joshua cannot live without is his cat Katie Kat. He says ” she is 6 years old and is the cutest thing known to mankind. She’s a black and white tabby cat who curls up and lays down with anyone.”

If you could spend one day with anyone – alive or dead, real or fictional. Who would you choose?

If Joshua could spend the day with anyone it would be comedian Kevin Hart so he could just spend the day laughing out loud!

What 3 words best describe your competitive swimming experience?

If I had to describe my experience in swimming in three words I would have to say;

DEDICATED, MOTIVATED, & DEMANDING

Thank you to Joshua from Triton Swimming for Joining #TeamBelieve
