As all the guest started to arrive at the house I retreated into my bedroom to watch TV until it was time for me to go to bed. About an hour after the party started Jack came to my room to bring a plate of food to me from the kitchen. When he did he told me that I was not to sleep with my Grandma that night and that I was to stay in my room. He also proceeded to tell me that he would be in to visit me later that night and if I was not in my room I would be grounded. I responded by saying that I would sleep in my room. However, I knew I did not intend to be in my room or anywhere in the house that night. When Jack would come looking for me I would be gone!
I spent the remainder of the evening watches horror movies in my room. I knew I probably should not have been watching them. I would press the previous button on the remote when anybody walked in my room. My Mother and Grandmother would have both said that the movies would give me nightmares. Truth be told they did. Nevertheless, the nightmares did not scare me. I had seen much scarier things than ghosts.
Around midnight my Grandma Lois came to check on me and encouraged me to go to bed. I was sleepy and starting to fall asleep while I was watching TV. Therefore, I agreed and followed her into the spare room. She waited until I crawled into bed then she kissed my forehead, said good night, left the room and closed the door. After a few seconds, once I knew she was gone, I quietly got up out of bed and put my running shoes on. I was going to be prepared tonight!
My plan was to lower myself out of the bedroom window into the back yard where I could escape up the side of the house and down the street without anybody noticing. I wanted to have my shoes on so that I would not be trying to run from the house barefoot. I knew that would slow me down and that I would not have long to get away before the fight eventually would end up close to the bedroom door. Then my mother would come running into my room in some sad attempt to try to save me. I wanted to already be out the window and far down the street by the time this would occur.
So I laid back down on the bed and covered up my feet so that you could not see that I had my shoes on. By this time, it was quite loud in the house. The music was blaring and the house was full of people. You could hear the hum of the conversations and the voices in the distance. I quickly drifted off to sleep knowing it would not be more than maybe a couple more hours before I would finally be able to break free from my home. It was the only time I can remember that I looked forward to my mother and Jack fighting. I was not scared tonight. I was ready to be free!
